Sodium thiosulfate can be used in laboratories and other aquaculture facilities for the neutralization of chlorine or polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine solutions such as Ovadine® (PVP Iodine).

Chlorine is highly toxic to fish and crustaceans. Therefore, when disinfecting tanks or equipment with sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or when using tap water for transportation or stocking, it is crucial to remove the chlorine before introducing fish or other aquatic life.

Features and Benefits

  • For the neutralization of chlorine solutions: The amount of sodium thiosulfate required can vary depending on the pH of the water. An approximate range of 2 to 7 parts sodium thiosulfate is generally suggested to neutralize 1 part chlorine.
  • To neutralize 1 liter of chlorine solution at 200 ppm concentration, approximately 0.4-1.4 grams of sodium thiosulfate would be required.
  • To neutralize 1 gallon of chlorine solution at 200 ppm concentration, approximately 1.5-5.3 grams would be required. Use of a chlorine test kit is recommended.
